July 18th
I woke up at 6 am but didn’t get out of bed till 715am. We started biking at about 8:45 our earliest time yet. There just seems to be so much to organize and get ready before each ride and I don’t feel like waking up earlier. We don’t have an alarm clock and like it this way. We get up when we get up. We arrived in thunder bay around 430pm. We always take at least an hour break at lunch time with usually a small siesta of about 15 to 45 minutes. We stopped at the terry fox monument briefly and took pictures. From here you can see the famous sleeping giant, a silhouette of a small mountain which looks like a person lying down. We took off for dorion, a small dot about 40 km west of nipigon. Part of the road was under construction and gravel, lots of fun with the trucks kicking up stones and dust in your eyes not to mention the bumps and lack of space to ride. Today with had only 73 hills but some east of thunder bay were quite steep and long. We are in eagle canyon next to ouimet canyon. Eagle canyon is privately owned and has the longest suspension bridges in canada, a great view. You are not allowed to bike on the bridges though. We had a campfire at night and stayed up until about 2 am talking. In the morning I will walk the canyon again and then bike another 200km naturally. I have a small tear in my left calf which tightens up every now and then. Smaller gears and higher cadence will be in order. I am really looking forward to coming home for a night and see my family as well as sleep in my own bed!
